MCC Welcomes Annual Safety Inspections

Campus

Every January, as part of Montgomery Community College’s safety plan, staff welcomes inspectors from the Environmental Health and Safety Institute to the College, hosted at Blue Ridge Community College. They come to campus and conduct a rigorous annual safety inspection, mirroring those conducted by agencies ensuring adherence to Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards.

Many areas of MCC are essentially industrial spaces. They include welding labs, automotive facilities, and machining shops. Annual safety inspections help College staff recognize workplace hazards that could potentially cause serious injuries or expensive fines.

Annual inspections occur in eight areas at MCC: the Chemistry Lab, Machine Shops 166 and 169, the Knifemaking Shop, the Bluing Room, the Metal Finishing Lab, the NRA Lab and the Pottery Building. While MCC typically receives high praise for the safety efforts of faculty and staff, this year’s inspection was especially impressive. Staff from EHSI only found a couple of power cords that had excessive wear and needed to be replaced. Those recommendations were immediately implemented by staff and the affected equipment is back in service. MCC prides itself on being a safe and healthy workplace for students and employees. To only have one minor safety recommendation in a college speaks highly about the commitment of the maintenance staff and faculty as they work to ensure the safety of students, employees, and visitors. Partnering with the Environmental Health and Safety Institute is an excellent way to detect and eliminate hazards and prevent injuries. We at MCC appreciate their in-depth inspections and recommendations for a safe learning environment. Congratulations and thank you to everyone at MCC who works maintains this safe environment.
