Ms. Amanda Beaman, winner of this year’s Excellence in Teaching Award at Montgomery Community College, placed in the top three for the honor across all 58 of North Carolina’s community colleges! Beaman is a graduate of MCC with an Associate in Applied Science degree. She has worked for the College since 2005, and is currently the Department Chair of Medical Assisting and Phlebotomy.

Beaman believes understanding students holistically is crucial for their success in education. “Throughout my teaching career, I’ve realized that each student is unique,” explains Beaman. “By taking the time to learn about their individual needs and goals, I can better support their educational journey. When students visit my office to inquire about Medical Assisting or Phlebotomy, I ask a series of questions to understand them on a deeper level. Learning about their goals, expectations, family, career, and motivations helps me meet the student where they are and guide them to where they want to be.”
As one of MCC’s most respected instructors, Beaman believes it’s crucial to be a lifelong learner to ensure that you continue to meet the needs of the changing populations of students. “If I emphasize the importance of continuing education to my students, I must also practice what I preach,” said Beaman.
In August 2016, Beaman was asked to take over the Phlebotomy program at MCC, offering it as a Career & College Promise Pathway to rising juniors and seniors. The program had never been offered in high schools before, which meant she needed to create a new program outline so students could complete it in a 16-week semester. The program Beaman created has now been successful in Montgomery County high school curriculum for nine years, usually exceeding maximum enrollment each semester.
In 2020, Beaman became the Department Chair of Phlebotomy and Medical Office Administration. In August 2022, she also became Program Director of the Medical Assisting program. She has recently begun development of an accelerated pathway for students to complete their certification in Medical Assisting in two semesters.
“Amanda Beaman has been such a blessing to MCC and to her students for many years,” said Dr. Chad Bledsoe, Montgomery Community College President. “She embodies teaching excellence in the way she goes above and beyond to connect with students and guide their educational journeys. What is even more impressive is that she helps students succeed in healthcare, one of our nation’s most challenging and rapidly-evolving fields! All employees here at MCC salute Amanda and congratulate her on this extraordinary statewide recognition, and we are grateful for her continued commitment to MCC and to her students.”
